Artistic Explorations of Astrophysics and Cosmology: Screen Prints Exploring Perception, 2016

As part of the Department of Physics and Astronomy’s 2016 Artist in Residence Program, the artist worked with Drs. Carlos Badenes, Arthur Kosowsky, and Jeffrey Newman regarding their research in Astrophysics and Cosmology.

The artist notes that in their research discussions, she found that each approach provides a more nuanced understanding of the universe; however, these complications remind us that our understandings may be fleeting and that the universe is still incomprehensible.

The project responds to the question of comprehension, through the incorporation of nearly translucent interference inks within the screen print series. The artist’s intention with this print series is to broadly mirror the manner in which Drs. Badenes, Kosowsky, and Newman attempt to collect information about the universe, by creating images that are impossible to fully comprehend as self-contained images.
