Living in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, Most Livable City

Pittsburgh has all of the metropolitan amenities, but it also has a refreshing small-town atmosphere. Extending beyond the lively downtown area, the city is awash with quaint shops, unique restaurants, and an abundance of theaters and parks. An ethnically rich city, Pittsburgh has retained its friendly residential neighborhoods—small communities with their own history and traditions.

Center of Commerce

Some of the world’s major corporations call Pittsburgh home, including H.J. Heinz Company, PPG Industries, U.S. Steel, and Bayer Corporation. Pittsburgh is a rich educational and cultural metropolis, consistently ranked among the most livable cities in the nation. Pittsburgh’s cultural assets are many and varied. The list includes a symphony orchestra; opera; ballet; modern and classical dance groups; jazz and piano bars; numerous theaters and film houses; and a year-round menu of touring rock, country, and alternative bands.

Only in Oakland

Oakland is the educational heart of Pittsburgh, home to two major universities, the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. Adjacent to the University of Pittsburgh campus in Oakland is the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, featuring museums of art and natural history, Carnegie Music Hall, and the main branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. The Carnegie Museums (of Pittsburgh) also include a science center and an art museum honoring Pittsburgh native Andy Warhol, both located on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

Outdoor Adventure and Sports

The city’s parks—and the wooded Western Pennsylvania surroundings—offer outstanding opportunities for golfing, skiing, boating, running, biking, rock climbing, white-water rafting, hiking, fishing, and much more. Pittsburgh also is a big-time sports town, with professional football, baseball, and hockey teams, as well as lots of top sports action in college and high school competitions.

Vibrant Communities

The combination of warm, ethnic neighborhoods with the bustle and activity of a major metropolitan center create a distinctive and welcoming style that is characteristically Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh has it all—big city ambience without the hassle.
