Kira Tsvetkova “Rats Live On No Evil Star”

For this work, Kira Tsvetkova considered the natural randomness of the universe to challenge the human tendency to search for patterns in everything and assign meaning to coincidences. The original inspiration for the work comes from Carles Badenes’ research on multiple star systems and the metaphorical idea of companionship between stars. Similar to how individual stars interact to form stellar marriages which then compose the broader universe, the individual patches of a quilt constitute a larger form. Each piece acts like a unique data pixel in a gradient plot and the image eventually reveals itself.

Tsvetkova is a visual artist, and a candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio arts, a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, and a minor in Swedish language. Her art addresses themes of space and environment, sleep and dreaming, surveillance, and natural patterns.
