Faculty Position in Astrophysics

University of Pittsburgh

Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a new faculty member in astrophysics. This tenure-stream position will be at the Assistant Professor level, starting on or after September 1, 2019, subject to budgetary approval. The University of Pittsburgh Department of Physics and Astronomy is also hiring a tenure-stream position in machine learning and astrophysics or high energy physics. Relevant candidates are encouraged to apply to both openings. Application materials may be duplicated between the two positions, but must be submitted separately.

We are seeking candidates who will complement and extend current research strengths in astrophysical surveys, theoretical cosmology, and extragalactic astronomy. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in survey astronomy, but we will consider all candidates who can build on current areas of research. The Department is a member of the LSST Corporation and the Simons Observatory and participates in the ACT, DESI, SDSS, and Subaru PFS projects. Successful candidates should have a demonstrated record of research success, a vision for their future research program, and potential for a high degree of teaching effectiveness at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. To ensure full consideration, complete applications should be received by November 1, 2018. Applications should be submitted online at: https://facultysearch.as.pitt.edu/apply/index/MjM3.

Candidates should submit a letter of application; a CV which includes lists of invited talks, of grant, telescope, and computing time applications, and of leadership and mentoring activities; a research statement; a publication list; a brief statement of teaching interests and experience; and at least three letters of reference.  Applicants should also provide a statement describing their previous efforts and future plans for building and supporting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive academic environment.

For each reference, you will have the opportunity to input a personal email address or an email address generated through Interfolio’s Online Application Delivery. In both cases, an email notification will be sent to the designated address with instructions about uploading the letters to our system.

Women and members of minority groups underrepresented in academia are especially encouraged to apply. The University of Pittsburgh is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer and values equality of opportunity, human dignity and diversity. EEO/AA/M/F/Vets/Disabled.
