Nigel Goldenfeld, from the University of California, San Diego visited the department to give the 2025 John David Crawford Lecture. His public lecture, titled "Beyond Chaos: The Continuing Enigma of Turbulence," took place on September 25, followed by a technical talk on September 26 titled "The Life and Death of Turbulence."
The Department established the Memorial Lecture Fund in honor of John David Crawford (1955-1998), Associate Professor of Physics, who died on August 23, 1998 of Burkitt’s Lymphoma. He was a member of the Department since January of 1990 when he was hired to establish a theoretical program in non-linear phenomena.
This was the ninth Crawford lecture. The first lecture was held in 1999 and given by Henry Abarbanel. Other past lectures were given by Edgar Knobloch, Leo Kadanoff, Frank Wilczek, William Bialek, Eric Heller, Susan Coppersmith, and Tony Heinz.
