Dr. Rachel Bezanson's UNCOVER Project Wins Major Award

Congratulations to Dr. Rachel Bezanson, whose work has won the 2027 Lancelot M. Berkeley–New York Community Trust Prize for Meritorious Work in Astronomy! This award, presented annually by the American Astronomical Society (AAS), recognizes "meritorious research" in the field published within the prior year.1

Dr. Bezanson is co-Principal Investigator of the UNCOVER project, in conjunction with Dr. Ivo Labbé of the Swinburne University of Technology, leading a team of more than 50 collaborators around the world as they use the James Webb Space Telescope to conduct "deep NIRCam multiband imaging and ultradeep low-resolution NIRSpec/PRISM spectroscopy of the Frontier Field Abell 2744."2

AAS Senior Vice President Ted Bergin says of the project, “UNCOVER has fundamentally expanded our view of the early universe, revealing a population of distant galaxies and growing black holes that was largely hidden from previous observations. Its discoveries challenge our understanding of how the cosmos took shape while setting a powerful example of how large-scale collaboration can advance astronomy.”
